LVA ALERT

Towards the end of the last state legislative session a budget proviso was enacted to study the feasibility of eliminating 250 beds in our state’s RHCs.  This feasibility study has been completed and will be used by those seeking to close RHCs.

It has been clearly demonstrated that closing RHCs will not save our state money.  This feasibility study calls for increasing DDD expenditures to facilitate RHC closures.  We must convince state legislators that enacted reductions must truly save dollars, not cost taxpayers more dollars.

During bad economic times the state must preserve core services.  Closing RHCs reduces services available to the developmentally disabled citizens of our state.

Most who desired to leave RHCs have already done so.  Current RHC clients have intensive special needs that require reliable, highly trained staff.  Taxpayers have invested heavily in developing such staff within our RHCs.  Thanks to dedicated RHC staff, RHC respite services are a valuable community resource.  It will take an enormous infusion of new dollars to build reliable community infrastructure to replace these services.  Can this happen during hard economic times?

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

If you are a developmentally disabled citizen, or parent, guardian, RHC advocate, of someone who depends upon RHC services:

Stay in contact with your RHC’s parent/guardian organization.  Stay in contact with ActionDD, our state RHC advocacy organization.  Educate yourself so you can educate your state legislators.  Learn who your state legislators are and contact them before and during this state legislative session.  Use the ActionDD website.  Check the below Union websites.

If you work for DSHS Division of Developmental Disabilities:

Whether or not a Union member, stay in contact with the Union Local(s) and state Union(s).  Educate yourself so you can educate your state legislators.  Learn who your state legislators are and contact them before and during this state legislative session.  Use the Union websites.  Check the above ActionDD website.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
Our state’s budget problems require solutions that actually save money.  Closing RHCs and moving clients to community settings will cost much more if RHC clients are really going to receive equal services.

THANK YOU,  Lakeland Village Associates Executive Board
